I primarily incorporate Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method into the couples therapy sessions. EFT focuses on adult relationships and attachment/bonding, recognizes and teaches the importance of identifying and expressing emotions in the relationship and places them front and center during session. It also helps couples to increase their emotion regulation abilities as well as help to cope with difficult and intense emotions within the marriage. These skills are critical for the success of all couples.
The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy that integrates research based interventions. The goals of Gottman Method Couples Therapy are to disarm conflicting verbal communication, increase intimacy, connection, respect, and affection, remove barriers in conflict, and create an increased level of intimacy and understanding within the marriage. I incorporate the Sound Relationship House Theory and teach antidotes to replace the Gottman Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (see video below).
Couples have weekly homework assignments to complete. Sessions are typically 80 minutes in duration to allow enough time for couples to learn and implement their new skills with their spouses in session.
I have successfully completed all of the Gottman Method Couples Therapy Levels I, II, & III and I am a trained Gottman 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work Educator and Facilitator.
